Acne During Pregnancy

Pregnancy makes the skin extra sensitive and a common skin problem during pregnancy is acne. The surge of hormones and other physical changes during pregnancy can trigger off acne or make preexistent acne worse.

This is due to the increase in the androgen hormones in the body during this stage.

With the surge in this hormone the production of sebum increases, leading to an accumulation of bacteria and dead skin cells. This can cause skin irruptions and pimples.

One of the most common problems when dealing with pregnancy acne is that the medications such as Acutane, Salicylic Acid, Retin A and Minocycline, Tetracycline which are normally used for acne treatment are not recommended during pregnancy.

Over the counter gels, lotions and topical antibiotic creams containing clindamycin and erythromycin can be used only after consulting your gynecologist.

As opposed to this it is vital that simple home remedies be used to treat the acne during pregnancy. Washing the face regularly with lukewarm water and a mild soap or a gentle cleanser can keep the dirt and grime off the face. Avoid harsh soaps that strip away the natural protective oils off the face, thus causing excessive sebum production.

After washing the face use and oil free moisturizer to hydrate the skin. If you are using cosmetics then use nonacnegenic ones that do not irritate the skin or clog the pores. Do not rub the skin harshly or pop the zits as it can worsen the problem.

You can also use some simple home remedies for acne that you can use during pregnancy. Apply tomato pulp or the juice of one lemon on the acne to cure it. Cucumber or grated potato juice can also help in keeping the acne and pimples at bay. You can also dab on some rose water on the pimples and zits to heal the acne and make your skin soft and glowing.

In addition to this eating a healthy diet and drinking six to eight glasses of water everyday helps in flushing out bodily toxins and keeping the skin healthy. You can also drink lemon juice to build up the immune system and remove the acne
