Constipation During Pregnancy

Constipation is a common complaint of many pregnant women.The problem of constipation can happen at any time during your pregnancy. If you are constipated, then you will have difficulty in performing bowel movements. You will also feel bloated and uneasy quite often.

There are many causes for constipation to occur during pregnancy.The rapidly changing hormonal profile in the body can be attributed as the main cause of constipation during pregnancy.

During pregnancy the increase in the amount of the hormone progesterone production causes relaxation of the muscles of the digestive tract. As a result food moves slowly through the system and hence its digestion is slowed, thus resulting in constipation.

The increasing pressure exerted by the growing uterus on your rectum also contributes to this condition. Prenatal iron and calcium supplements are also seen to worsen the condition of constipation.

Instead of trying to find out a treatment for constipation it is always better to take remedial measures to prevent it.

Always keep yourself hydrated and drink plenty of water. Try to start your day by drinking 2 glasses of warm water. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. If you don’t drink enough water, then it will cause your stools to become dry thus worsening the condition of constipation.

Drinking a glass of prune juice daily is also found to be helpful in tacking constipation.

Have a healthy diet rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates. Include fresh fruit, legumes and oatmeal in your diet. Also avoid junk food, aerated drinks and products containing caffeine.

Always listen to your body and do not try to withhold bowels movements. The more you try to hold back your stools, the drier they will become. This will largely increase your constipation problems.

A sedentary lifestyle can also be the cause of constipation during pregnancy. Try to involve yourself in light exercises. Exercise stimulates the movement of intestinal muscles thus providing relief from constipation. Swimming and walking are two exercises which can be safely done during pregnancy.

Do not take any over the counter laxatives without consulting your doctor. If the problem of constipation during pregnancy is left untreated, then it will pave way for further complications like hemorrhoids.
