Coping With Back Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful phase for a woman but brings a package of discomfort like morning sickness, edema, constipation, aches and pains etc along with it.. To have a healthy pregnancy it is important to have a healthy diet, a good posture, right kind of position while sleeping and a regular exercise routine.
You need to relax, take time for yourself and overcome stress; this will enable a healthy normal pregnancy. Back pain is quite common among pregnant women especially because there is need for more support due to the overload, a change in the center of gravity, pelvic changes and loose joints because of pregnancy hormones.

The first thing to adopt would be regular exercise though you need to consult your health provider before taking up any specific routine. Doing exercise regularly helps in stretching the back and relaxing the muscles, stimulating circulation. The added benefit of an exercise routine is that it also helps towards child birth.

Secondly one must adopt the right posture since poor posture exerts pressure on the back and results in pain and discomfort. Avoid standing for long and be sure to wear flat comfortable shoes. You may need a slightly bigger size in case your feet are swollen due to water retention. It is good to sleep on the left side and preferably place a cushion between your knees.

This way you are giving your back maximum comfort. Avoid sleeping on your back. You may try acupressure but be sure to get it from a registered practitioner with experience working with pregnant women. Acupressure involves applying pressure at specific points to relieve back pain.

Massage therapy is another common way of alleviating back pain. A good massage therapist will be able to use specific techniques to alleviate swelling, back pain and stress. It is best to go to a professional though you even get a mild massage done.

You may even consult a chiropractor as he will help you do specific exercises to alleviate pain and train you to have a good posture. For several pregnancy related pains you may contact a chiropractor as he will help you have relief. Overall enjoy your pregnancy by relaxing yourself and making small lifestyle changes.
