Heartburn is a cause of concern for many pregnant women. Heartburn refers to a burning sensation in the middle of the chest. The action of the pregnancy hormones on the digestive system causes pregnancy heartburn. Due to the hormonal activity, the acids in the stomach leaks to the esophagus resulting in heartburn.
By following a few tips you can take care of the problem of heartburn.
Take control of your diet. Stay away from heart burn triggers like carbonated beverages and spicy and fried foods. Avoid caffeine, peppermint and chocolate. Your meal plan should also be devoid of oranges, grape fruit, pine apples and tomatoes as all these are found to trigger the problem of heart burn.
Eat small and frequent meals. Do not rush with your meals and eat your food slowly. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Do not drink in between your meals as it hinders with your digestion and can lead to heart burn.
Do not hit the bed immediately after having your food. Sleeping on a full stomach slows down digestion and hence increases acidity. Sit up straight for a few hours after you have completed your meal. You can also go out for a walk after your dinner. This helps in digestion and takes care of heartburn.
Try to keep your head in a raised position while sleeping. You can use pillows for this purpose. Elevating your upper body will help in keeping the stomach acids in their proper places. While sleeping, try sleeping on your left side. This position is seen to be optimal for the proper functioning of the digestive system.
Having yogurt or a glass of milk daily is a natural remedy to the problem of heartburn. You can also have one teaspoon honey mixed with a glass of warm milk. Chewing gum also helps in tackling heartburn as gum triggers saliva production and neutralizes the effect of the stomach acids.
Do not wear clothes which are tight at the tummy and waist regions. Also if you want to bend down, bend down at your knees and not at your waist. These methods ensure that the stomach acids are not leaked into the esophagus. Also quit smoking, as smoking is found to trigger the incidence of heart burn.
Thus by proper care and precaution, the problem of heart burn during pregnancy can be tackled efficiently.
