However as a lactating mother you need to be careful about your diet as whatever you eat becomes food for your baby. One of the most important nutrients needed for lactating mothers is calcium. Dairy food are a great source of calcium, however it is not important to drink milk to produce milk. You can consume any non dairy source to satisfy your body’s calcium needs. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests five daily servings of any calcium-rich food. These can be cheese, low fat yoghurt and among non dairy products it can be salmon, sesame seeds, tofu, broccoli and kale.

Today’s medical science stresses that it is important for lactating mothers to watch what they are eating and not concentrate on the calories consumed. In the end it is all about having a balanced diet and controlling your intake of sugar and sugary snacks.
