Epilepsy And Pregnancy

Millions of people worldwide suffer from epilepsy (seizures). Seizures are caused due to various reasons and its effect is also different from person to person.

However it causes more complications if the sufferer is a woman. Pregnancy is a vital phase in a woman’s life but if that woman is epilepsy’s suffering, too much Pregnancy precaution has to be taken because there are many risk factors which can harm the mother as well as the fetus.

If you want to conceive, no need to worry. You just need to be aware of the facts, precautions and risk factors related to epilepsy. Given below are some facts which an epileptic patient (woman) should know if she is going to be pregnant for successful pregnancy and delivery.

If you are an epileptic patient and pregnant too, the rate of your seizures may increase. Instead of getting scared about it, you should take care not to be alone. There should be someone with you while you are climbing stairs or crossing the roads. If seizures attack you while you are climbing stairs, apart from giving injury to you, it can cause of miscarriage.

If you want to know whether anti-seizure drugs will affect your child or not; the answer is that it will affect your child badly. Hence before getting pregnant, you must consult your doctor and tell him/her about your plan. He/she may change the medicines or suggest you some alternatives.

Few women want to know whether their child will be born as normal child or not. No! Except some rare cases, children of epileptic mothers suffer from some or the other kind of abnormalities. However, the abnormalities can be minimized and you can give birth to a healthy child if you are regularly in touch with your doctor.

Epileptic women are less fertile in comparison to women without epilepsy. You might face irregular periods,  polycystic ovarian syndrome or your body might not produce eggs required for getting pregnant. Therefore don’t get discouraged if it takes time in getting pregnant. Doctors will recommend you to take extra folic acid while you are trying to conceive to prevent some major complications during and after your pregnancy.

Remember, if you want to give birth to a child despite being epileptic, you can do it successfully. Go for it with proper care.
