If the expectant mother consumes alcohol during her pregnancy she may give birth to a child who might have birth defects.
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition in which a baby is born to such alcoholic mothers, with permanent birth defects. Generally these babies are underweight and small in size and may have a small head and small eyes.
If you are pregnant and consume wine, beer or liquor then think about the consequences that may result. Your alcohol consumption directly affects your unborn child which retards his/her mental and physical growth and give rise to several health problems and cause birth defects.
These babies when born usually have heart defects, delayed development, and hearing or vision problems. And when they grow up they may suffer from behavior problems. Mental retardation is the most severe problem faced by such children.
When the expectant mother consumes alcohol in any form, it passes the placental barrier. It means that along with mother her fetus also consumes alcohol. We can just imagine how much harm the alcohol must be causing to the fetus. Alcohol permanently damages the central nervous system of the fetus, especially the brain.
This leads to malformation or under development of the brain cells which gives rise to many functional and cognitive disabilities. There are several other effects of alcohol on the fetus of a pregnant mother who consumes alcohol during her pregnancy. The growth of the fetus can be retarded, there may be facial abnormalities, and cause many other mental, physical, and behavioral problems.
The brain of the child generally develops during the first trimester of pregnancy. Thus if an expectant mother consumes alcohol during the first trimester of pregnancy, her kid will be born with the most grave problems. If you give birth to a child who suffers from birth defects, you won’t be able to forgive yourself for your selfishness. You have no right to make your child’s future dark due to your alcohol addiction.
Alcohol does not harm only your child; it also puts your health at risk. But if you do not worry about your own health at least care for your baby’s health. There is no cure for the fetal alcohol syndrome at present. Hence prevention is the only option for you. Do not consume alcohol before and during your pregnancy. You can save your child from being affected with FAS.
