Food Poisoning During Pregnancy

Food poisoning during pregnancy can become a serious concern for the expecting mother as well as the baby. Usually eating unhygienic and unhealthy food can trigger the problem of food poisoning.

Moreover during pregnancy the body of the pregnant woman undergoes numerous changes and the resulting changes make the pregnant woman susceptible to problem of food poisoning.

The symptoms of food poisoning differ in their severity depending on the intensity of the food poisoning. The common symptoms of food poisoning include diarrhea, dehydration, nausea, vomiting and increase in body temperature.

The adverse effects of this ailment can be extremely stressful for the fetus and can even result in miscarriage or still birth if it is too severe. Pregnant women often suffer from bacterial food poisoning known as listeriosis. If this infection gets intensified, it can become fatal for the fetus and cause its death. Or else the severity of the infection can make the new born susceptible to breathing ailments or meningitis.

To overcome such a situation, antibiotics can be taken but only with the prescription of the doctor. Toxoplasmosis is another type of food poisoning caused during pregnancy which can have a detrimental effect on the eyes of the new born and sometimes it can also prove fatal for the fetus.

Nonetheless pregnancy is a critical time for the expecting mother and the fetus and hence it is important to take extra precaution to ensure the safety of both of them. Keep the kitchen area hygienic and free from germs. This is the area where food is prepared and any source of impurities can contaminate the food.

Avoid taking pets into the kitchen as they are more susceptible to catching infections and germs. Wash all vegetables and fruits and use sterilized utensils for cooking food. While washing dish clothes, use warm water to get rid of the impurities.

Stay away from the use of packed food items. Even of you do wish to use them, be careful about expiration dates. Avoid keeping cooked food for long even in refrigerators. Cover all food items and maintain as much cleanliness as possible. In case you notice any symptoms of food poisoning in the expecting mother consult the doctor immediately.
