How To Get Baby To Sleep At Night

Are you tired of all those sleepless nights where all you seem to do is change diapers and feed your newborn? Many new parents go through this problem and most do not even remember the last time they had a good night sleep since the birth of their baby.

Most people assume that sleepless nights are just a normal part of parenting a newborn. However the good news is that you can take certain steps to ensure that your baby and you have a nice uninterrupted sleep the entire night.

The first step is to understand why your baby stays awake all night. Well, the simple reason for this is that a newborn just does not understand the difference between day and night. So maybe it is just foolish on our parts to expect the baby to naturally fall asleep at night like we do.

To ensure that your baby understands the difference between night
and day ensure that during day he is placed in a bright environment full of noises. This keeps the baby alert and awake. Do not darken the room or place the baby in a room devoid of noise during the day.

Subdue this noise and light at night and make sure that your baby is relaxed. You can also have your own bedtime routine wherein you incorporate a last nursing session or sing a lullaby to your baby. Whatever it is, make sure that you follow it consistently.

Teach the baby to soothe itself to sleep. This can be a little difficult as parents tend to pick up their howling child as soon as they start crying and rock hem to sleep or put them to sleep while feeding.

However this can cause a lot of problem as the child will soon wake up to find himself without the warmth and comfort of secure arms around him. So each time your baby is about to take a nap, put him in a crib while he is still trying to doze off and rock him gently to sleep.

If the child has a favorite blanket or a cuddly soft toy that he loves then place it next to him. This will serve as comforter for the baby when he wakes up startled in the middle of the night. Moreover do not pick up the baby as soon as he starts crying. Instead speak softly, rub his back and put him to sleep gradually.

Remember that this is not an instantaneous process
and your baby often requires several weeks before he can adjust to this routine. However if parents religiously stick to this routine then soon they will find their newborn sleeping like a log through the night.
