How To Induce Labor Naturally

For some women, pregnancy might seem to go on forever as the baby fails to come out even well past the due date.It is usually a depressing condition to see the due date come and go with no signs of labor.

In such cases, induction of labor is done. Many methods are adopted to kick start the process of labor. But you should not try inducing labor before the 40th week of your pregnancy, as it may give rise to unwanted risks.

Below discussed are some methods by which we can induce labor naturally.

Nipple stimulation is a commonly practiced painless method to induce labor. You can massage your nipple areas with your hands or use a breast pump to stimulate them.Nipple stimulation releases the hormone oxytoxin which in turn encourages uterine contractions.

The disadvantage of this process is that sometimes the stimulations can cause sudden and strong uterine contractions which can have an adverse effect on the fetal heart rate. Therefore this process should be practiced only under the guidance of your midwife or obstetrician.

Another method widely
practiced to naturally induce labor is acupressure techniques. There are many pressure points in our body.It is seen that by massaging  and application of pressure on a pressure point in the foot, we can bring about uterine contractions and thus induce labor. You should seek the help of a qualified reflexologist who will guide you through the process.

Sex is considered
as a very effective method of labor induction.A component in semen, known as prostaglandin is seen helpful to induce labor. After having sex, lie down with your legs raised up. This will facilitate the flow of semen and will allow it to soften the cervix, thus encouraging labor.

You can also try going for long walks in order to bring about the induction of labor.Walking puts extra pressure on the cervix. Also the swaying of the hips during walking helps to position the baby for labor.

Having castor oil is seen to induce labor in some cases.Castor oil is a laxative and can cause bowel spasm which can trigger uterine contractions. But the disadvantage of using castor oil is that, it may cause uncontrolled bowel movements, leading to diarrhea and dehydration of the mother.

Labor can be induced naturally by the above said methods. If these methods are not found effective, then your physician will try to induce labor by adopting methods like membrane stripping.
