Infertility Treatment: Intrauterine Insemination

Infertility affects many couples due to many factors including low sperm and egg quality, low sperm count, irregular ovulation cycle etc. Couples who have been trying to get conceived unsuccessfully for at least 12 months can be termed infertile.

With advancement in medical science, new and improved techniques for treating infertility are now available. Nevertheless, one of the oldest techniques which is still use these days with effectiveness is IUI pregnancy or intrauterine insemination. For couples who failed to conceive naturally, intrauterine insemination is a feasible alternative.

In this procedure, the sperms are placed into the uterus artificially with the help of a catheter tube thereby enhancing the prospects of the sperm fertilizing the egg as more sperms can now reach the egg.

So who is a candidate for intrauterine insemination? Those men in whom the sperm count is low can opt for this treatment. However, his sperm quality should be normal even as the sperm count is low. This means the cause of infertility should be related to lower sperm count and quality of sperm should not be a factor.

Also, in women with minimal cervical mucus, IUI pregnancy can be the right procedure. The cervical mucus facilitates the movement of sperms toward the uterus. In some women, this mucus just does not accept sperms, and in cases where the mucus is low the motility of the sperms are reduced thereby decreasing their chances of countering an egg on the way to the uterus. In such cases, placing the sperms directly into the uterus will solve the problem.

So what actually can you expect during intrauterine insemination procedure?  First your spouse should go through a thorough examination and a sample of his semen is given for testing. This test is to establish the quality of the sperms. In women IUI treatment is successful when she has a regular ovulation cycle.

If your ovulation cycle is irregular, then you may be given medications prior to getting IUI treatment. Also, your fallopian tubes and uterine cavity are examined to establish their normality. The quality of your egg should also be normal. The sperms are then treated and placed in the uterus.

IUI treatment has been quite successful in helping infertile couples to become parents. You can also try it if you and your spouse qualify as ideal candidates.
