Know More About Common Cold

Common Cold is a common recurring health problem. Known also as Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, it occurs more in children than in grownups

Common cold is caused by one or more of several causes like, bacterial or viral infection, conditions related to nervous disorders, the structure of nasal bone, nasal polyp, low resistance power of the body etc.

Common Cold is of two types – Acute Rhinitis (immediate cold) and Chronic Cold (Continuous Cold) based on the time span taken for recovery. It can also be classified as bacterial, viral, allergic and non-allergic based on its causes as well.

Viruses like adenovirus, rhinovirus, riovirus, r. s. virus, cochsacci virus etc. causes viral cold.

Streptococcus, staphylococcus, Haemophilus influenza, pneumococcus etc. are the bacteria that are responsible for bacterial cold. Cold usually occurs due to viral attack rather than bacterial infection. If not properly treated, the infection can spread to sinus glands, throat or lungs causing sinusitis, bronchitis, bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Children may get infected with cold 6 – 12 times a year because of their low resistance power. Adults may get cold 4 – 6 times a year. If you get infected with cold frequently you need to do a medical check up to find out its reason. Frequent cold is resulted by chronic sinusitis, allergy, immunity problems, tropical eosinophilia, immotile cilia syndrome etc. Proper medication need to be taken to control such conditions.

Preventing Cold
Dust, smoke, body sprays, pollen grains etc. can cause allergy which may lead to infection. Keep the interiors of your home dry and clean. Avoid or restrict cold beverages and food items.

Once you get infected with cold, wash your nose using lukewarm salt water frequently. The decoction prepared by using dry ginger and basil leaves should be taken 3 – 4 times a day. These remedies will reduce the intensity of infection.

If your child is infected with cold you may let him take rest and administer the above remedies. If the intensity of cold does not decrease within 48 hours, give him proper medical attention.

Intake of vegetable soups will provide necessary nutrition to the body. Consumption of vitamin C rich fruit juices can boost up the resistance power against infection. Strict following of cough and sneeze hygiene is necessary. Rest should be taken in a room with plenty of air circulation.
