Knowing Stomach Ache During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman undergoes various hormonal changes and hence biological changes in her body. All these changes are part of natural process for normal growth and development of the fetus inside the mother’s womb.

These changes are accompanied by occasional bouts of lower abdominal pain. So, abdominal pains or stomach ace is a very common problem faced by pregnant women. Some of the other common reasons are -

Reasons for Stomach Ache During Pregnancy

  • During pregnancy, as the fetus grows, uterus also expands to carry and hold it. As a result, stomach gets squeezed and this leads to abdominal discomfort.
  • During pregnancy, there is excess release of progesterone. This hormone results in slow digestion of food and hence leads to constipation and abdominal pain.
  • For healthy development of fetus, there is additional requirement of nutrients. But growing pressure on stomach, intestines and secretion of hormones which leads to slow digestion, leads to gas and bloating.
  • Usually during second semester of pregnancy, the ligaments that support uterus thicken to accommodate and support the growing size of fetus. This leads to long lasting pain on one or both sides of the abdomen. This is called round ligament pain.

Thus, because of various reasons, there are stomach aces during pregnancy. All these, mild, occasional or short lived stomach pain is absolutely normal and part of pregnancy. So, the best remedy is to sit down calmly and relax.

However, pregnancy is a very delicate phase of womanhood and so severe or persistent abdominal pain should neither be ignored nor should be taken lightly. Doctors should be consulted in situations where one experiences abdominal pain along with spotting, bleeding, fever, chills, vaginal discharge, and faintness. Besides this, symptoms such as discomfort while urinating, nausea, and vomiting, or when the pain do not subside even after rest, requires doctor’s advice.

Ectopic pregnancy is the one where fertilized egg is implanted outside the uterus, in one of the fallopian tubes. In such cases, abdominal pain is one of the symptoms of confirmed pregnancy which the woman comes to knows later. When left unattended, it may rupture and become life threatening.So, doctors must be consulted.

Miscarriage is a situation when there is heavy bleeding followed by abdominal pain. The pain is usually similar to menstrual cramps and lasts for longer time or even for few days.So, it’s important to visit a doctor in such cases.

Preterm labor occurs during second or third trimester. In this situation, there is an increase or change in type or color of vaginal discharge and is accompanied by cramps.

Placental abruption is the partial or complete separation of the placenta from the uterus. Symptoms include sudden bleeding or gradual spotting and contractions. It is a serious condition when it happens before the baby is born and hence requires visiting the doctor.

Preeclampsia is a disease common in pregnant women who suffer from high blood pressure and high protein in the urine. This results in swelling of the face, hand, feet, ankle or puffiness around the eyes. In extreme cases, it may affect liver, kidneys, brain, and the placenta and the woman have intense pain or tenderness in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting etc. So, this requires doctor’s visit.
