Many women complain about having leg cramps during the their pregnancy. While leg cramps can occur at anytime, it is mostly seen to happen during night time.During pregnancy, leg cramps are mostly caused due to the weight gain of the expectant mother.
As the pregnancy progresses, the load on your legs is also increased due to the growing pregnancy belly. The extra pressure exerted by the growing uterus on the blood vessels leading to your legs can also cause leg cramps.
A deficiency of calcium and potassium in your diet is seen to cause leg cramps. Leg cramps can also be caused by an over intake of phosphorus .An extravagant supply of phosphorus in your diet causes the body to absorb very less amounts of calcium thus causing leg cramps.
Exercise is one of the best methods to combat leg cramps during pregnancy. Walking daily helps in increasing the blood circulation, thus giving you higher resistance against the problem of leg cramps.
You can also do routine stretching exercises daily. Stretching decreases the tension in the muscles and increases their flexibility.
Avoid standing or sitting with crossed legs for a long period of time.These positions can compromise the blood flow to your legs thus causing their cramping.
While sitting keep your legs in an elevated position by placing them on a stool. You can also try enhancing the blood flow by rotating your ankles and wiggling your toes.
Do not wear tight clothing that will restrict the blood flow to your legs. You can try wearing supportive stockings to ease the leg cramps.
Avoid lying on your back as it will slow down the circulation in your legs. You can try sleeping on your left side to promote better circulation of blood. While sleeping, you can also keep your legs in an elevated position by placing pillows beneath them.
Take proper care of your diet. Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will help in the proper contraction and relaxation of the leg muscles.
Eat foods which are rich in calcium and potassium. Include more dairy products, leafy greens and bananas in your diet.Also reduce your intake of soft drinks and processed snacks as they contain large quantities of potassium which can aggravate the problem of leg cramps.
If the leg cramps get severe, and is accompanied by swelling, then do consult your physician immediately.
