The causes of low blood pressure during pregnancy are far and many. Dehydration is the most prevalent cause for causing dizziness in expecting women. During pregnancy, certain hormones are secreted that also cause changes in blood pressure levels.
Supine hypotension is generally triggered when the enlarged uterus exerts more pressure on the blood vessels. It is experienced mainly while lying down. Postural hypotension gets triggered when blood collects in the legs and the flow of blood to the brain is restricted.
When getting up from bed or chair, it is common to experience this kind of hypotension. Furthermore, anemia and hypoglycemia have also been identified as reasons for hypotension in pregnant women.
In most cases, blood pressure levels stabilize on reaching the second trimester. But in some women, the symptoms of hypotension may continue throughout the course of pregnancy. Eating a healthy and nutritious diet is the foremost strategy to combat hypotension. Frequent light meals can be taken instead of heavy meals.
Ample amount of fluids should be consumed to keep the body hydrated. It is advisable to rise slowly from a chair or a bed and refrain from sitting or standing in one position for too long. Expecting women should try to lie on their sides as lying on their backs can exert undue pressure on the blood vessels.
Regular mild exercise ensures the proper circulation of the blood in the body and prevents pooling of blood. Nonetheless regular and timely visits to the doctor along with adequate rest are essential for ensuring health of the mother and the fetus.
