Obesity And Pregnancy

Maternal obesity is one of the main reasons for many pregnancy related complications. A person is said to be obese if he or she weighs more than 30 percent of the ideal body weight. Obesity can be caused due to lack of exercises, a poor diet or even certain medical conditions.

Women who are overweight will have to face a large number of complications during the time of their pregnancy. They will be highly prone to develop conditions like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. The chance of a normal delivery is very low for such women and most of them will have to undergo cesarean section.

The incidence of a premature delivery
increases when the pregnant woman is overweight. Also obese women will have a very slow recovery rate, post delivery.

Maternal obesity not only affects the mother but it poses many risks to the baby also. The incidence of birth defects in the baby will be very high if the expectant mother is overweight. The baby will be prone to develop neural tube defects like spina bifida.

The baby will tend to put on too much weight during his developmental stage,thus leading to a condition known as macrosoma. This will cause complications during the time of delivery. Sometimes conditions can get worse and even fetal death can occur. The baby will also have to face the problem of childhood obesity later on.

The problem of obesity should be taken seriously so as to avoid any pregnancy related complications. There are some measures which can be taken to fight the problem of obesity.

Try to reduce your weight, well before you start planning for a baby. Following a well balanced diet and doing regular exercises are the methods by which you can shed your unwanted weight.

Cut off oily foods and junk foods from your diet. Include lots of vegetables, fruits, low fat dairy products, pulses and lean meat in your diet.

Do not lead a sedentary life style. Keep moving around. Walking is one of the easiest and effective methods to achieve weight reduction. It will be enough if you just walk for 30 minutes a day. You can also go for swimming and attend regular yoga sessions.

Thus by following a healthy lifestyle you can tackle the problem of obesity and can ensure yourself a safe and healthy pregnancy.
