Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is supposed to be a very happy time for the expectant mother. But there are many ailments which tag along with pregnancy. Pelvic pain during pregnancy is one such troublesome condition.

Pregnant women mostly experience pelvic pain when they near the final trimester of their pregnancy.

This condition is also termed as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). The symphysis pubis joint joins the two halves of the pelvis together at the front .SPD occurs when weakening is experienced in the joints.

This weakening and relaxation of the pelvic muscles caused by the action of pregnancy hormones can lead to pelvic pain.

The baby’s growth leads to a change in the woman’s center of gravity. This causes an imbalance in muscle coordination which will in turn strain the muscles and joints in the pelvic region. Bad posture of the expectant mother will also add to an increase in pelvic pain.

The condition will be characterized by severe pain in the pubic area. Sometimes the pain might seem to radiate down the thighs and legs.

Pelvic pain during pregnancy limits your movements and your ability to walk will be almost impaired. Even simple things like moving around in your bed may accentuate the pain.

You can follow some steps so as to take care of the problem of pelvic pain during your pregnancy.

Heat is found to relax the muscles and ligaments in the body and decrease the sensation of pain. Try placing a hot water bottle in the region of pain or take a long warm bath.

Massaging and acupressure techniques are also found helpful in relieving pain in the pelvic region.

Correct your posture and sit upright with your back well supported. Do not lie down on your back. Sleep on your left side with a pillow placed in between your knees. This will keep the hips in an aligned position.

Do not work continuously and do take enough rest. Avoid lifting or pushing heavy objects. While climbing stairs do not rush up, but climb one stair at a time.

You can also do simple pelvic exercises like kegels and pelvic tilts. Walking is another recommended form of exercise. Wear a pelvic support belt to hold your bones in place.

If you experience severe pelvic pain, then it should be given immediate attention as it might be a symptom of tubular pregnancy.
