Select the Right Crib Mattress for Your Baby

As a new parent, you would want your baby to get the best of everything. Comfortable sleep is one of the foremost needs of a baby.

You need to select the right types of bedding and crib for your baby so that your little one gets comfortable sleep. A crib mattress must always be purchased after you have bought and assembled your baby’s crib, since the mattress must be of correct size with respect to the crib.

There are many varieties of crib mattresses available in the market, and you need to carefully choose the one that suits your budget and requirement.

The most important factor while selecting a mattress is to check if it will fit correctly into your baby’s crib. You do not want too much space between the crib edges and the mattress as this would increase the risk of your baby slipping through the mattress and the crib.

A thumb-rule while checking the size of the mattress is that you shouldn’t be able to easily insert more than one finger between the mattress and crib edge. Ventilation and fire-retardation are other important safety characteristics in a baby mattress. Look for mattresses that have ventilation holes as these are indicators of breathable mattress.

Breathable mattresses can reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Multi-layered mattresses are better from a durability point of view. Mattress these days also have covers with water-resistant lining, which is a desirable quality in mattresses for new-borns and infants. There are also mattresses with anti-bacterial lining material, which will prevent germs from thriving on the mattress in case your baby throws up or spits on the mattress.

The density of the mattress is also an important factor. A very soft mattress is not recommended for a baby. Buy a reasonably firm mattress as this is safe and comfortable for babies. Pushing down the center of the mattress with your palms can give you a measure of the firmness of the mattress.

The more your hands sink into the mattress, lesser the firmness of the mattress, making it not very suitable for your baby. It is not necessary to spend a fortune to get a safe and comfortable mattress for your baby and with the above mentioned guidelines you should be able to select a suitable crib mattress.
