Tips to Control Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common condition in children as well as in adults wherein there will be an increase in the frequency of bowel movements and loosening of stools. Diarrhea can be resulted by either viral or bacterial infection. Intestinal diseases, indigestion, food poisoning etc. can also cause diarrhea.

Diarrhea is found in children aged below five years. Those children who have low resistance power of the body are susceptible to this infection. Children with anemia are also easily affected. Ear infections, throat infections and lung infections can also cause diarrhea in children.


Avoid all those food items that you suspect might have caused the infection. Purify water by boiling it for half an hour in 100°C. Dissolve 5 gm salt and 20 gm sugar in one liter of pure water which will help to hydrate the body and also to get relief from fatigue.

To regulate the frequency of bowel movements take lemon juice mixed in strong decoction of tea. Rice soup if taken with salt can provide energy. Buttermilk can also be given to hydrate the body. 50mL of pure cold water if taken frequently can prevent vomiting. Cold lime juice and cold honeyed water can also control vomiting.

To treat stomach pain due to diarrhea, apply hot water bag to the abdominal area. Alternatively you may also do sponging with hot water. This has to be immediately followed by sponging with cold water. To get relieve from head ache due to diarrhea, dip your legs in warm water and sponge the forehead using lukewarm water.

Food intake should be restricted. Avoid all unhealthy food items like fried foods, artificial foods etc. Also avoid meat, fish, eggs, milk etc. those are difficult to digest. Instead of solid food, take semi-fluid or liquid food like vegetable soups, rice soup etc. Take diluted juice of fruits like pomegranate, lemon, grape, sweet lemon etc. which can provide necessary nutrients to the body. These fruit juices will also help to get energetic by relieving fatigue.

Know these symptoms

If symptoms such as blood in stools, high frequency of bowel movements, vomiting, fever, fatigue and low blood pressure exist, immediate medical attention is required. In the case of diabetes patients such symptoms can worsen the conditions causing diabetic ketosis. Hence proper immediate medication has to be administered in the case of diabetes patients.
