During and Post pregnancy, all women get edema on their bellies. Sometimes other parts of the body including ankles, feet, legs, etc get swelled. Such kind of bloating in the body is referred to as “edema”.
Postpartum stage often witnesses swelling in the legs and arms due to injection of IV fluids into the body and the retention of excess fluids during the course of pregnancy.
Edema goes away with time. However by following these steps you can quicken the process of reducing edema.
Firstly avoid intake of salt as salt has the tendency of retaining huge quantities of water. This causes the body to bloat. Drinking plenty of water and other fluids is recommended for reducing edema.
Water enables the excess fluids in the body to flush out through urination. Hence the swelling disappears gradually. It is also helpful in reducing the occurrence of muscle cramp especially in legs which is a common postpartum symptom. Eat healthy and balanced diet. Raw fruits and vegetables are essential for decreasing the bloating of the body.
It is advisable to elevate your feet to reduce swelling from feet and legs. Place a cushion under your feet while sleeping and elevate your feet when sitting on chair. The feet should be raised 6 inches above the heart to reduce the swelling.
Along with it, you can wear compression stockings which stimulate the circulation of blood from feet to upper body and hence prevent accumulation of edema in the feet and ankle region. It is also advisable to wear shoes that are supportive and snug-fitting. Such shoes discourage swelling and promote healthy circulation of blood from feet.
Brisk walk is highly beneficial in postpartum stage. You can even practice mild exercise like yoga and stretching to avoid tension of muscles and improve blood circulation. To reduce swelling from ankle, wiggle your toes and move your ankles in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.
Another tip to be followed is to lie down on the left side of the body. The vena cava is situated on the right side and stimulates edema. Don’t sit for too long. Take a walk around or stretch your body once in few hours.
