Antenatal classes are very good for mother’s and father’s; it is at these classes that they learn lots of things about their pregnancy and delivery. It is best to attend these classes during your last trimester. and you will need to go for about eight weeks.
At your antenatal class you will be given guidelines about your diet and fitness. Important things like how to care for your teeth and gums, back problems that you will experience, sex during pregnancy are some of the topics that will be discussed. You will be taught breathing exercises that will help you during labour and delivery and how your breathing needs to change during your contractions.
You will be shown exactly what happens during labour. Your antenatal teacher will demonstrate how a breech baby can be born naturally and inform you of the options of pain relief at the time of labour. You will be shown how to breastfeed and massage your breasts and how to care and clean the nipples.
Your teacher will give you a list of all the items you will need for yourself and the baby at the hospital. Another great thing about going for an antenatal class is that there are other women like you who will experience the same problems as you. Make friends with them and take down their numbers.
Keep in touch with them even after the delivery so that you can compare and discuss problems that you may be facing. Just knowing that you are not alone will help you get through some of your problems.
In your antenatal classes all of you will be asked if you are experiencing any problems and discomforts. Listening to others will also help you deal with your own problems. It is not necessary for your husband to attend all the classes. He should attend the ones where you are being taught the correct breathing and positions for child birth. He will also be given guide lines as to how he can help you through the delivery.
Ask your antenatal teacher if you con contact her if you have any problems after the delivery in terms of breastfeeding. She will surely be able to help you.
