Which One Is Better: Medical or Surgical Abortion?

Which way is the best way for abortion? The medical or surgical abortion? The Medical abortion involves use of medicines which helps in the contraction of the uterine. While in surgery, the pregnancy is physically removed from the uterus.

It depends upon various things. Like in which of the trimesters the pregnancy is. Pregnancy has three trimesters. The first trimester is from week 1 to week 12. The second trimester is from week 13 to week 26. And the third trimester is from week 27 to full term of pregnancy.

The procedure to follow is critically dependent upon the trimester of the pregnancy. Also important to understand is the effects of both the procedures. Generally the medical abortion is done within the first 9 weeks. As the time of the pregnancy increases, the success rate of the medical abortion decreases. On the other hand surgical operations are more successful after the sixth week.

The length of the medical procedure is longer and the pregnancy is terminated in two sessions. The whole process can take more than two weeks. The surgical procedure is intense and it will take 3-4 hours to remove the pregnancy.

The pain in the medical process is much higher as most of the women complain about pain. This pain can be there for the whole duration of 2 weeks. Women also have heavy bleeding during this time. The pain is less in the surgical process. It may last a maximum of 10 minutes.

Medical abortion though more painful and longer is less expensive compared to the surgical process. In the process there are no chances of any sort of any cervical injury or perforation. The process is safe in the way that there is no instrument is inserted in the body. It is also more a natural process where slowly the contraction takes place and the child is aborted. The surgical process is an operation so it has its dangers. But if done properly the surgical process is also safe, takes less time and no side effects which may be there in the medical abortion.

It is also a personal choice and one needs to look at one’s health before choosing the method of abortion.
